Blair Hornstine has always been committed to achieving outstanding goals throughout her life. When she was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease that kept her from attending high school as a normal teenager would, she was forced to complete her studies from home. After intense medical and academic review, Ms. Hornstine was granted the privilege of receiving home school according to the strict rules and regulations of her high school, Moorestown High, the board of education, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). This arrangement was lawful and seemed to be agreeable for both Ms. Hornstine and her high school administrators, until she was about to graduate.
With all of her grades calculated, Blair Hornstine’s GPA was 4.6894-the highest GPA of her class of over 350 students. According to the technical rules of Moorestown High, the student with the highest GPA at the end of his or her seventh semester is to be awarded the honor of being valedictorian. However, she soon learned that another student was in the running as well, but his grades were not as high as Ms. Hornstine’s. He was being considered because some thought Ms. Hornstine received special privileges for being home schooled. After a long legal deliberation, Ms. Hornstine was victorious and was allowed to be Moorestown High School’s rightful valedictorian of 2003.
Blair Hornstine held a number of leadership roles while in high school. As a leader in didactically oriented and rhetoric-focused activities, Blair Hornstine learned to focus her energies on what was right, what was logical, and what was in accordance with the Law. When Blair Hornstine received the highest grade point average in her 2003 graduating class from Moorestown High School, she fought and won for her nomination as sole Valedictorian against all odds. When Blair Hornstine heard of the plight of countless young girls in China who could not afford operations to repair cleft lips and palates, Blair helped spearhead a fundraising effort that gathered enough contributions to pay for 16 such operations for young girls in need in the People’s Republic of China.
Currently attending law school, where she is scheduled to receive her Doctorate of Jurisprudence in May 2010, Blair Hornstine aspires to dedicate herself to public interest law. The daughter of a Superior Court Judge father and a community volunteer mother, Ms. Blair Hornstine is eager to help others fight for their rights, just as she was given the strength to fight by her loving and supportive family.
