Bellview Biltmore - Historic Hotel & Spa
This historic southern hotel built in 1897 by railroad mogul Henry Plant, sits on a 22 acre bluff overlooking Clearwater Bay. Today it remains a full service hotel including an 18 hole golf course, tennis club, spa and restaurants. Even if you don't stay, it's worth taking one of the historical tours offered daily to the public.
Tampa Bay Downs
If you've never been to the horse races, they're worth visiting at least once. Nowadays horse racing is only part of the excitement - Tampa Bay Downs also features betting from all the major tracks, poker tournaments and state-of-the-art golf facilities.
Tarpon Springs
Tarpon Springs is a historic Greek community settled by Greek sponge divers at the turn of the century. It's full of great restaurants, shops, museums, art galleries, and old churches. Take a lunch or dinner cruise down the Anclote River, see a sponge diving exhibition or go deep sea fishing.
Bayshore Blvd. Trail
Go for a run, walk or bike on the "world's longest continuous sidewalk" (about 4.5 miles), that runs along the bay, ending in downtown Tampa. Take in beautiful views of Tampa Bay and ogle the multi-million dollar homes along the way; then head up Howard Avenue to the Hyde Park historic district for some great restaurants and shopping.
Museums & Observatories
St. Petersburg Great Explorations Children's Museum
This is the place where your child can become a veterinarian for a day, play a laser harp, make a puppet, or take a lie detector test. This museum will provide hours of fun with dozens of creative hands-on learning exhibits. Themes are changed often, so you can keep coming back again and again.
Manatee Viewing Center
This is truly a hidden gem produced in the most unlikely of places, the discharge canal of Tampa Electric's Big Bend Power Station. When bay temperatures drop below 68 degrees Fahrenheit, the manatees gather, in huge numbers, and the Manatee Viewing Center creates a platform for watching these amazing creatures in their natural habitat. The center is open from November 1 to April 15, and parking and admission is donation only. Bring a camera, you're sure to get some once in a lifetime shots!
Fantasy of Flight
Tour through three hangers of vintage aircrafts featuring over 40 rare planes, most dating back to WWI and WWII, and many restored to flyable condition. Watch an aerial demonstration, take a tram tour and see a vintage plane being restored, or climb into an actual cockpit of a Corsair fighter, take the controls and immerse yourself in a video aerial battle.
Gamble Plantation State Historic Site
Step back in time and view a sample of southern life prior to the Civil War. Tour the only surviving plantation house in South Florida; a 19th century mansion on the once 3,500 acre sugar plantation owned by Major Robert Gamble. ______________________________________________________________________________________________
