The steel decks were caulked too, and painted, prior to getting laid with teak planks. When the shell was finished, then the new ship was launched.

But this was only the initial stage. Then followed the smiths, joiners, carpenters, joiners, cabinet-makers and painters to match her out, and most importantly of all, the engineers who made and fitted her mighty steam engines.
