The Tough Get Going, Part II: Get smart(er)

::: When economic times are tough, it can be tempting for designers and creative folk to boo-hoo over the work that they’re missing out on. But in Part Two of our five-part series dedicated to shaking the doldrums of our dismal economy, we’ll show you instead how enterprising designers have found the proverbial silver lining in this financial free-for-all.

First off, there are two universal truths we should all keep in mind about any recession: 1) when you’re in the middle of one, you’re convinced it will never come to an end; and 2) it will come to an end. And while the economy likely won’t recover as quickly as we’d like, it’s because of Reason No. 2 that we should all look at this recession as something other than an opportunity to brush up on our Tetris skills. Look at this downtime as an opportunity — an opportunity to get smarter, and to get prepared for the day when the phones start ringing off the hook again. Even the best designers have gaps in their skill set; pick an area where you’re deficient and vow to become proficient by the time things perk up again. If you’re web-challenged, learn a development application. If you’re web-savvy but print-phobic, try your hand at package design. In other words, embrace this time as a chance to become better at what you do. Considering the current state of your 401K, an investment in broadening your creative skills is the best long-term investment you can make right now.
