Assistant Professor of English, Communication, and Theater at Berea College in Berea, Kentucky, Jason Cohen holds advanced degrees in English Literature and has earned numerous awards. A member of the Berea faculty teaching undergraduate courses in the humanities since 2008, Jason Cohen’s courses include Shakespeare: The Late Plays; Nietzsche, Freud, Marx, Film; Renaissance Texts: Literary Forms of Political Language; and the Senior Seminar in English.
Recognizing that research is at the core of academic life, Dr. Cohen challenges students to apply research to promote critical thinking. He teaches them to hone their reasoning and persuasion skills and counsels them to read slowly and learn how to interpret texts. Jason Cohen encourages students to ask questions, form reasoned arguments and conclusions, and to write with precision. His teaching and his scholarship focus on the connections between literature and philosophy and their relationship to cultural and literary theories and to film.
The Faculty Director and founder of the Apollon Undergraduate eJournal (www.apollonejournal.org), Dr. Cohen mentors students as they revise and review their submissions to the journal. Dr. Cohen's impetus for launching Apollon focuses on highlighting undergraduate student research inside and beyond the classroom. His interest in promoting and developing undergraduate intellectual work extends beyond English, and it has also been gaining momentum as his faculty partners and student contributors increasingly recognize the value of expanding their interests beyond the walls of the classroom. He helps to market the journal on campus, solicits student essays, and looks for students with the talent to contribute. Submissions might include graded coursework or research projects in theater, art, music, architecture, or design.
Dr. Cohen’s recent research topics include examinations of natural and political philosophy and 17th century prose. His present book topics investigate Francis Bacon's natural and political works, and his second project examines the social influence of tragedy on the late works of William Shakespeare. He is a faculty sponsor for the Ultimate Frisbee Club, and he served as sponsor of the Berea Moving Pictures Club until it disbanded in 2009.
Jason Cohen enjoys running and hiking on the trails behind his home in Berea with his wife, Meghan, and their dog, Mac.
