Board certified in cardiovascular diseases, internal medicine, echocardiography, and nuclear cardiology, Miguel Zabalgoitia, MD, has applied his extensive training and education as a clinician, scientist, and educator. Most recently, he performed as a Cardiologist at Valley Regional Medical Center, in Brownsville, Texas, where he also served on the Organizational Performance Improvement Committee. Earlier, Dr. Miguel Zabalgoitia spent nearly two decades as Director of Non-Invasive Laboratory for Bexar County Hospital District’s University Hospital in San Antonio.
For many years, Miguel Zabalgoitia, MD, has balanced his clinical roles with academic positions--first, as Professor of Medicine at San Antonio’s University of Texas Health Science Center, and later as Clinical Professor of Medicine at Southern Illinois University, in Springfield, Illinois. During his years in San Antonio, Dr. Miguel Zabalgoitia also regularly mentored students in the Summer Research Program at the Hispanic Center of Excellence affiliated with the University’s Health Science Center.
A longtime researcher, Miguel Zabalgoitia, MD, has sought to expand his field’s understanding of atrial fibrillation, valvular heart disease, cardiomyopathies, and coronary artery disease. His ongoing study of atrial fibrillation has repeatedly been funded by the National Institutes of Health, as well as by AstraZeneca, Inc. Dr. Zabalgoitia’s other research programs have attracted the support of the US Department of Defense, Duke Clinical Research Institute, DuPont Pharmaceuticals Company, and Merck, Inc., to name a few. The results of his research have appeared in leading academic publications, such as The Lancet, the Journal of the American College of Cardiologists, and Annals of Internal Medicine. Throughout his nearly 30 year career, he has published more than 100 papers, 72 abstracts, and 8 book chapters.
