Candy-maker says U.S.-made products are untainted

The Hershey Company, which manufactures and sells Cadbury chocolates in the United States, said it does not buy powered milk or other milk ingredients from China.

"All Hershey products use the highest-quality ingredients and are completely safe," the candy giant said in a written statement. "This includes Cadbury products manufactured and distributed in the United States by The Hershey Company."

The announcement follows Monday's recall of 11-types of Cadbury chocolates made in China. The British-based candy company took that action after the products tested positive for melamine.
"Spoofing" signals can lead to disastrous results for travelers

Just like flat-screen televisions, cell phones, and computers, global positioning system technology is becoming something people can't imagine living without. So if such a ubiquitous system were to come under attack, would we be ready?

It's an uncomfortable question, but one that a group of Virginia Tech and Cornell University researchers have considered with their research into spoofing GPS receivers.

GPS is a U.S. navigation system of more than 30 satellites circling Earth twice a day in specific orbits, transmitting signals to receivers on land, sea, and in air to calculate their exact locations. Spoofing, a not-quite-technical term first coined in the radar community, is the transmission of fake GPS signals that receivers accept as authentic ones.
Electra Bicycle Company is expanding its recall of Amsterdam bicycles. The chain can derail, possibly injuring the rider.

About 1,500 bicycles are included in this recall. Another 9,500 bicycles were recalled on July 22, 2008.

The interior alignment tabs of the bicycle’s chainguard can be pushed against the chain causing it to derail, which poses a risk of injury to riders.

Electra has received four reports of the chainguard derailing the chain, including one report of minor cuts and abrasion from a fall.

This recall involves some Amsterdam model bicycles in the Classic 3, Original 3, Royal 8, and Sport 3 styles. The bicycles have an enclosed chainguard. “Electra” and “Amsterdam” are printed on the bicycle’s frame and/or chainguard. Bicycles with frame numbers beginning with “EL” or bicycles with chainguards marked “06/08” are not included in this recall. The frame number is located on the underside of the bottom bracket.

The bikes were sold by Electra Bicycle dealers nationwide from January 2007 through June 2008 for between $400 and $850. They were made in Taiwan.

Consumers should immediately stop riding these bicycles and contact Electra Bicycle to determine if his/her bike is included in this recall. Consumers with a recalled bike can bring it to an Electra Bicycle dealer for a free inspection and replacement chainguard part.

Government safety agency mum, company blames victims for cuts, burns

It has been nearly three years since ConsumerAffairs.com first reported that consumers were being cut and burned by exploding Pyrex bakeware. The company was quick to deny the problem and government safety regulators seemed untroubled by the reports.

Three years later, not much has changed. Many consumers still rely on Pyrex bakeware for everyday cooking chores, trusting that the baking dishes can safely go from the oven to the countertop to the freezer.

But more than 300 complaints filed by ConsumerAffairs.com readers detail frightening stories of these dishes spontaneously shattering during temperature changes, propelling scalding glass shards and food 15 feet or more, sending some consumers to the hospital with tendon and nerve damage and serious burns and leaving others with property damage and, at the very least, a ruined dinner and a huge mess in their kitchen.
Risk prevention programs need better teen education

Ten feet tall and bulletproof. That's the way a lot of teens see themselves when they get behind the wheel.

In fact, new research published in the August issue of the Journal of the American College of Surgeons finds most teens' attitudes regarding trauma-related injuries, particularly those due to motor vehicle crashes, reflect a sense of invincibility and focus on fate rather than choice.

It's easy to pick on teenage drivers, but they do, in fact, have the highest motor vehicle crash and fatality rate of any demographic group. Injury prevention programs, which educate the public about the link between injury and high-risk behaviors such as infrequent seatbelt use, impairment because of alcohol abuse, and speeding, are a requirement for accredited trauma centers.
Sites promising exotic Asian, Russian women are often scams ... or worse

I was in an internet café in Thailand last year, trying to work out which continent I should fly to next, when my attention was entirely absorbed by an attractive Thai girl who sat down next to me and logged in. She gave me one of those Thai smiles that could mean anything at all and then concentrated on her correspondence. I was beginning to wonder if Thailand had its merits after all and couldn’t help stealing repeated glances at her.

She was totally absorbed in her online conversations with four messenger windows going at once, however, and in each of them I could see the photo of a Western guy. The youngest had to be 45 at least.

I miss you.
When you coming back?
I wait for you but I no have money for my rent.

I looked at her again and realized she was wearing too much makeup and revealing clothes for the average Thai girl. She almost certainly worked in a bar as a hostess for Western guys looking for Eastern romance and now that their holidays were over, her "boyfriends" were back home at work, dreaming of the month or two they’d spent in Thai heaven. They’d be coming back as soon as they could afford it — if their "girlfriend" didn’t drain their bank accounts dry in the meantime.
Have you received an unsolicited e-mail or phone call from someone who claims to represent your local election board or civic group and asks for your Social Security or credit card number to confirm your eligibility or registration to vote?

According to the Federal Trade Commission, scammers may send messages asking for your Social Security number or financial information supposedly to register you to vote -- or to confirm your registration -- but really want to steal your identity.

As a rule, federal officials say, organizations conducting legitimate voter registration drives either contact you in person or give you a voter registration form that you fill out yourself. They will never ask you to provide your financial information.

If you get an unsolicited phone call or e-mail from someone who claims to need your Social Security number or other personal or financial information to register you to vote, you can report it to the FTC by calling 1-877-FTC-HELP.
Extends airbag warranty for some models

BMW is recalling 200,000 cars and small SUVs because the front passenger-side airbag could fail.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) warned that in some of the recalled BMWs it is possible that "the front passenger airbags will not deploy even if a sufficiently severe accident would occur."

The recalled BMWs include the 2004 to 2005 5-Series standard and sport seat models, the 2004 to 2006 X3 and the 2006 3-Series with sport seats.

NHTSA reported on its Web site that the passenger-side airbags can deactivate because of wear associated with a passenger getting in and out of the vehicle.
Opponents say irradiation no substitute for careful handling of food

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has flashed a green light for two green vegetables to be zapped with radiation to kill bacteria and reduce foodborne illness. The FDA said the process would also give the produce a longer shelf life.

Both spinach and lettuce were associated with recent outbreaks of E. coli. Hundreds of consumers nationwide were sickened in late 2006 and dozens had to be hospitalized.

Although it is controversial, the irradiation process is nothing new. It has already been approved for use on meat, poultry, and shellfish such as oysters, mussels and clams.

Some consumer groups, including Public Citizen, oppose irradiation, saying it is not as effective as its proponents claim and is a substitute for filthy conditions in the food chain.

"That 5,000 people in the United States die every year from foodborne illnesses is tragic," said Food & Water Watch Executive Director Wenonah Hauter. "Food producers need to address the source of the problem -- too fast processing lines and dirty conditions at plants -- not promote an expensive, impractical and ineffective technology like irradiation."

Irradiation does not kill all the bacteria in food and may undermine other food safety efforts by masking filthy conditions and encouraging improper handling, Hauter said.
Windshield could pop out

Smart USA is recalling 43 of the 2008 Smart ForTwo mini-cars because of defective paint that could lead to the windshield coming out, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The NHTSA Web site reported that "a batch of paint sent to the company did not meet specifications" and the defective paint can apparently present a safety concern.

Federal safety regulators determined that the defective paint, which was used to coat the frame and chassis, could "delaminate" from the frame and body structure of the little Smart car.

Should the paint delaminate where the windshield and roof are attached with an adhesive, the risk of separation will increase, according to the federal safety agency.

"This could cause a crash if the roof or windshield separated from the vehicle while in motion," NHTSA warned on its Web site.

NHTSA reported that Smart dealers will repaint the affected areas when the recall begins later this month.

Owners of the 43 Smart ForTwo mini-cars involved in the recall can contact the automaker at 1-248-648-2451.
Two school bus manufacturers are recalling almost 28,000 vehicles, both school buses and commerical buses, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Navistar International is recalling 24,977 school and commercial buses because of potential stalling and a condition characterized as "hard starting."

The recall involves buses built in 2002 and 2008. They are the 2002, 2004 and 2008 IC/BE; the 2003 to 2008 IB/CE; the 2003 to 2008 IB/HC; the 2003 to 2005 and 2007 to 2008 IC/RE; the 2006 RESB; the 2002 to 2008 International/3200 and the 2002 to 2008 International/3300.

The "hard start" or stalling is caused by damaged terminals in a fuse connector that is part of the fuel injector system, according to the NHTSA Web site. "The terminals may have been damaged during electrical continuity testing in the manufacturing process," the agency reported.

The federal safety agency is "aware of 7 events of school buses where the fuse for the electronic control module has overheated and burned the fuse holder. The condition may result in a no-start, hard-start, erratic engine performance behavior or stalling," the safety agency reported.

NHTSA warned school bus operators that "these conditions could result in a vehicle crash, possibly resulting in personal injury."

Navistar plans to notify bus owners of the problem but has not yet scheduled any buses involed in the recall for repairs.

Bus owners can contact Navistar at 1-800-448-7825.

Blue Bird is recalling 2,503 of the 2006 to 2008 All American, Conventional and Micro Bird school and commercial buses because the wheelchair lift fails to comply with federal safety requirements.

NHTSA warned that the "anti-stow interlock" on the lifts may fail to detect the presence of a wheelchair because a sensing switch on the wheelchair platform is not adjusted to the proper sensitivity level.

"The lift could stow even though someone or something is still on the lift," federal safety regulators warned, "resulting in serous injury to the person remaining on the lift."

Owners of Blue Bird buses included in the recall can contact the company at 1-478-822-2242.
Bantry Bay products may be contaminated with dangerous toxins

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says consumers should be on the lookout for certain frozen cooked mussel products made by Bantry Bay Seafoods, imported from Ireland. The agency says they could be contaminated with azaspiracid toxins, a group of naturally occurring marine toxins known to cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps.

Unfortunately, there's little way to tell of food is contaminated with Azaspiracid toxins without eating it. The toxins are odorless, tasteless, and cannot be destroyed or neutralized by freezing or cooking, including boiling.

The FDA says consumers who have experienced gastrointestinal symptoms such as those noted above after eating any of the products listed below should consult their health care professional. Symptoms typically occur within hours of consumption and persist for two to three days.

In July, two people in Washington State became ill after eating the company's "Mussels in a Garlic Butter Sauce." FDA tested unopened product from the same production lot and found that it contained the azaspiracid toxins.

Consumers should throw out the following Bantry Bay Seafood frozen cooked products with "Best before end" dates ranging from January 23, 2009, to November 15, 2009:

• Mussels in a Garlic Butter Sauce

• Mussels in White Wine Sauce

• Mussels in Tomato and Garlic Sauce

The "Best before end" dates are displayed on the side of the box in the following format: MM:DD:YY. Products to be thrown out are marked with dates 01:23:09 through 11:15:09.

Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico and Utah included

Whole Foods Market says it is now extending its voluntary ground beef recall to include Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico and Utah. The voluntary recall in select states was issued for fresh ground beef sold between June 2 and August 6, 2008 because of a concern that it may be contaminated with E. coli 0157:H7 bacteria.

The beef in question came from Coleman Natural Beef, now owned and operated by Meyer Beef, which used Nebraska Beef for processing.

On the evening of August 8, 2008, Nebraska Beef issued a USDA Class 1 recall of 1.2 million pounds of beef because of possible E. coli 0157:H7 contamination of which only very small percentage was destined for select Whole Foods Market stores. The majority of this recalled product went to other retailers.
Automaker promises "affordable price"

Honda Motor Company plans to roll out a new five-door, five-passenger hybrid for April 22, 2009, next year's "Earth Day."

The yet to be named hybrid will below be priced below the Toyota Prius and Civic Hybrid, according to the Japanese automaker. The starting price for the Honda Civic Hybrid is now $22,600.

"We believe our hybrid system is best suited for smaller vehicles where the fuel-efficiency gains are the greatest," said Dick Colliver, Honda's executive vice president for U.S. sales. "The challenge, especially with small cars, is to bring the price down to where more people can afford it."
